It's the Durian season!

It's the start of the durian season! The easiest way to identify the start of a durian season is when marketplaces start selling baskets of durians rather cheaply. However, I've heard that it's best to start eating your way only in June, a little further into the season.

My family is a huge fan of the pungent fruit. I like it, but I can't say I'm a connoisseur. I can't identify variety from variety, but hey, I can tell what I like or don't like :p

We started this year's season with.... Durian Mousse Cake from Goodwood Park Hotel! And Durian puffs, which were all consumed before I thought of taking photos, hahahah.

I really like this mousse cake. The sponge cake, which is rather sweet, balances out the creamy rich flavour of the durian. It is also so very moist and soft, the way I like sponge cakes (minus the over sweetness though). The pulp in between the layers is really generous in portion, and with each bite, you can taste the pulpy skin and the creamy goodness. Yummy! A large cake of about 2kg costs us $46 after a 20% discount, which makes it really worthwhile to try!

And while I have no photos for the Durian puffs, they're even better than the cake! Just imagine a huge chunk of really good durian pulp and 2 small bits of pastry. Absolutely delish if you like the fruit! The unfortunate thing was that the puff base was rather dry, and certainly not the best cream puff I've had. It was edible only because of the durian in between!

I'll probably be heading to a durian planatation in June to enjoy more Durians, but for now, let me know:
Do you hate or love the fruit? Where's the best place to get durian-flavoured confectionaries? I would love to try out other durian pastries!
